Mayapur Festival 1975: Vishnujan Swami Leads Mangal Arati
As Srila Prabhupada and the devotees converged for the annual Mayapur Festival in the spring of 1975, Mayapur Dhama was charged with an electric sense of spiritual momentum. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was entering a transformative era of growth. Devotees from every corner of the globe gathered at the Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir on the holy banks of the Ganges. With historic projects rising—most notably the upcoming inauguration and deity installation at the Krishna-Balaram Mandir in Vrindavan—there was a collective feeling that the spiritual foundation Srila Prabhupada was building was on the verge of exponentially expanding across the world.
At the very heart of this awakening was the unforgettable presence of Vishnujan Swami. During the 1975 Mayapur Festival, his influence on the international assembly of devotees was significant. Vishnujan Swami possessed a rare ability to pour entire worlds of devotion into every note he sang, turning daily kirtans into ecstatic celebrations.
The Vision of Radha-Damodara Sankirtana
Vishnujan Swami’s spiritual vision had already been transforming the landscape of devotion in North America through the legendary Radha-Damodara Sankirtana Party (RDSKP). Traveling continuously in customized buses housing the deities of Sri Sri Radha-Damodara, the RDSKP distributed thousands of Srila Prabhupada's books and chanted in city streets day and night. This dynamic traveling party was a prime example of Vishnujan Swami's total dedication to realizing Srila Prabhupada's vision of a world flooded with the holy names.
Along with devotees sharing thei energy and remarkable programs from around the world, the RDSKP team mood enhanced the global gathering in Mayapur in 1975, Devotees gathered expecting extraordinary kirtans, but what unfolded surpassed every expectation.
Unforgettable Kirtans of Mayapur '75
The festival brought together a historic assembly of kirtan leaders. Vishnujan Swami, Acyutananda Swami, Dinanatha, and Hamsadutta, led memorable kirtans--the temple hall reverberated with mridanga rhythms with karatala ringing, and soaring vocal melodies. Vishnujan Swami’s intensely sweet, emotionally transcendent tunes, elevated the assembled devotees into ecstatic dancing and deep meditation.

The spiritual master is receiving benediction from the ocean of mercy. Just as a cloud pours water on a forest fire to extinguish it, so the spiritual master extinguishes the blazing fire of material existence, burning all people. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, who is an ocean of auspicious qualities.

Chanting the holy name, dancing in ecstasy, singing, and playing musical instruments, the spiritual master is always gladdened by the sankirtana movement of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Because he is relishing the mellows of pure devotion within his mind, sometimes his hair stands on end, his body shivers, and tears flow in waves from his eyes. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.
