The Unforgettable Kirtans of Mayapur in 1975
There are moments in history when devotion becomes so tangible you can almost feel the air vibrating. March 24, 1975, was one of those moments.
It was the first full day of the annual Mayapur Festival. The holy land of Sri Mayapur Dhama was charged with an electric spiritual energy. Just the day before, on March 23rd, Srila Prabhupada had arrived, greeted by ecstatic crowds of devotees who flooded the road as his car pulled into the Dhama. Dinanath Prabhu had been leading electrifying kirtans that set the stage for a festival like no other.
Earlier, Rupanuga Prabhu delivered a profound discourse on the first Catur-Sloki verse of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. As the philosophical weight of the morning settled into the hearts of everyone present, the mood was full of anticipation.

Then Dinanath das (ACBSP) began leading another kirtan.
The Heart of a Kirtan
While the surviving recording captures only the heart of this extraordinary kirtan, it preserves a vivid portrait of what it was like to be in Mayapur at that time.. You don't just listen to this audio—you step right into the middle of of the devotees chanting.
The Accelerating Rhythm:
The mridangas and kartals drive a thunderous tempo, accelerating into a breathless, joyous tempo that has hundreds of devotees dancing as one.
The Response of Hundreds:
Dinanath’s energetic call is met by a roar of voices—hundreds of devotees united in celebrating Gaura Purnima at the side of their beloved spiritual master.
The Sweetness of the Holy Names:
As the chanting transitions through the Hare Krishna Maha-Mantra, joyous chants of "Jaya Sacinandana", "Nitai Gauranga", and "Govinda" echo through the air, carrying the unmistakable warmth of transcendental affection.
A Timeless Energy
What makes this recording so special isn't just its historical significance; it is the raw, unfiltered devotion. Even decades later, the energy remains off the charts. Every beat of the drum and every call of the holy names reminds us of the power of congregational chanting when hundreds of hearts gather with a single purpose.
Whether you were there in Sri Mayapur Dhama in 1975 or are hearing this recording today, the invitation remains the same: close your eyes, take a breath, and join the chanting.
Sandhya Arati
That same evening, Dinanath led the evening arati for Sri Sri Radha Madhava in the Lotus Building, This tape became one of the most shared recordings of the second half of the seventies.
