Echoes of Srila Prabhupada at Radha Damodara in Vrindavan
– Guru das Remembers 1976
Step back in time to the spring of 1976. As the Mayapur-Vrindavan festival brought devotees from across the globe to the holy dhama, Guru das stood in the sacred courtyard of the Radha Damodara temple—the very place where Srila Prabhupada lived and translated the *Srimad-Bhagavatam* before coming to the West.
In this rare archival audio, recorded by Gopati das, Guru das shares intimate realizations and stories of Srila Prabhupada's early days in Vrindavan. The atmosphere is thick with devotion as he recounts the "iron will" and immense compassion of His Divine Grace. Accompanied by authentic 1970s parikrama photography by Gopati das, this video serves as a visual and auditory bridge to the foundational years of the Hare Krishna movement.
Guru das at Radha Damodara (1976)
Guru das: "First, let me begin by offering my respectful obeisances to all the Vaishnava devotees of the Lord... and as always, let me offer my most humble obeisances to my beloved spiritual master, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada."
On Srila Prabhupada’s Resolve
"People often ask about the early days. Prabhupada had such an iron will. Even when people would make fun of him, he stayed. He was in these very rooms [at Radha Damodara], writing and preparing. He refused to be swayed by the material conditions. This is why the English respected him—they could see he was not a man of this world.
On Dealing with Family and Devotion
"I remember speaking about how to handle one’s parents if they are not yet devotees. The Vedic injunction is that if a parent is not a devotee, they should be treated with the same care you would give a child. You become their father in a spiritual sense. You tell them, 'No, no, I will just take fruit,' or 'I will eat with you, but I will offer what Krishna has cooked.' You scrub the pots if you have to, but you remain fixed in the service of the Lord."
On the Legacy of Books
"People ask if the early manuscripts, like the *League of Devotees* writings, will ever be published. But they *are* published! They are within these books—the seventeen volumes of *Caitanya-caritamrta*, the sixty volumes of *Srimad-Bhagavatam*. Everything Prabhupada realized in these small rooms at Radha Damodara, he gave to the whole world."
Reflections on the Radha-Damodara Traveling Sankirtan Party (RDTSKP)
"In 1975 and 1976, we saw extraordinary personalities. Vishnujana Swami, whose chanting was like honey, and Jayananda Thakur, who never seemed to sleep. He would wake us up by touching our feet and shouting, 'Jiv jago, jiv jago!' (Wake up, sleeping soul!). We were a happy family, despite the overcrowding and the heat. We were simply happy to be serving Prabhupada."
Closing
"Being back here in this courtyard, you can feel that Srila Prabhupada is still here. His rooms are a place of eternal pilgrimage. Let us always remember the mercy he showed us by leaving this peaceful place to save the fallen souls of the West."
